The EU just made headlines by slapping a €3 duty on every low-value parcel from AliExpress, Temu and Shein, live from 1 July 2026. If you dropship AliExpress products to eBay, the obvious question is: does this hit me?
The honest answer depends entirely on where your buyers are. So let's skip the panic and go lane by lane — because if you sell to the UK, the news is genuinely good, and if you sell to the US, the important change already happened months ago.
Sell to UK buyers? You're fine until 2029. Sell to the US? The change that matters already happened in 2025 — and it's bigger than the EU's.

For context, because it's what triggered all the headlines:
- From 1 July 2026, parcels entering the EU under €150 get a flat €3 customs duty per item type — the exemption that let cheap China-direct parcels in duty-free is gone.
- It's charged per product category, so a mixed parcel can trigger multiple €3 charges.
- The full duty-free threshold disappears entirely by 2028.
That's the EU. Now — the part that actually matters to you.
🇬🇧 AliExpress → UK: you're okay (for now)
This EU rule does not touch parcels going to UK buyers. The UK keeps its £135 de minimis threshold until 2029.
The UK isn't in the EU, so parcels going to your UK customers aren't affected by the €3 duty at all. And the UK's own rules stay comfortable until 2029:
- On orders under £135, AliExpress already collects UK VAT at checkout — the parcel clears automatically, with no surprise customs duty for you or your buyer.
- Only orders over £135 attract 20% VAT plus duties on delivery — and most dropshipped items sit well under that.
So the typical AliExpress→UK→eBay model carries no new cost from this change. If you're a UK seller serving UK buyers, you can genuinely relax on this one. (One caveat: if you sell to EU customers from the UK, those parcels are caught — the EU treats UK sellers as non-EU.)

🇺🇸 AliExpress → US: the change already happened
The US suspended its $800 de minimis exemption on 29 Aug 2025. China-origin parcels are no longer duty-free — far more than the EU's flat €3.
Here's what the EU headlines are burying: the US already did something far more severe in 2025. Low-value AliExpress parcels to US buyers are no longer duty-free, and the duties can run to tens or even hundreds of dollars per item. If you sell to US buyers and haven't reviewed your landed costs since last August, that's the urgent job — not the EU news. (Analysis here.)

Line the three up and the trend is impossible to miss: the US killed its exemption in 2025, the EU brings full duties by 2028, and the UK's relief ends by 2029. The duty-free era for cheap China-direct parcels is closing everywhere.
The lazy version of dropshipping — cheapest item, thinnest margin, no idea of your true costs — is the one every one of these rules is designed to end.
What to actually do
- Know your real landed cost per listing — the AliExpress price plus any duty on the destination.
- Reprice or drop the products that no longer work.
- Lean toward higher-value products — a flat duty is noise on a £60 item and a killer on an £8 one.
- Watch delivery times — tighter border screening can slow parcels, and missed delivery estimates wreck eBay seller metrics.
